VISCERAL BODIES

An interpretation of beauty, colour and bio-luminescence that comes from the deep, one that most will never chance to see. This work teases the viewer into a world that is life e.quatic.

My e.quatic series of work is informed by the natural aquatic environment, and the creatures within. I utilise traditional sewing techniques, lighting and other incorporated technologies... a virtual luminescence, much as the human race embraces technology to enhance man-made accessories and immediate environmental experiences. This meshing is a process and aesthetic I endeavour to mimic within a lot of my own works.

Runner up for the Wearable Technology Award in the 2017 World of WearableArt Awards Show
Fantastic to have been named Runner Up for the Wearable TechnologyAward in the 2017 World of WearableArt Awards!!

LUX OPERON 1.3
Avant-garde Section
2017 World of WearableArt Awards

Artist Statement:
Lux operons are a series of genes controlling chemical reactions to produce bio-luminous pigments within some bacteria and marine animals.

I have utilised a combination of machine and hand-sewn techniques, as well as a 3D plastic extruder pen to produce this piece. Each part is designed to represent an element of texture that portrays my interpretation of Lux Operons - a series of genes controlling chemical reactions to produce bio-luminous pigments within some bacteria and marine animals.

Lux Operon represents the duality of visual expression observed in one form or another by an array of living creatures, be they some form of marine animals, or be they a form of bacteria, or be they an imagined entity within ourselves, they have the enviable ability to produce bio-luminescence as a reaction to their environment. As humans we need technology, our own form of luminescence, to utilise and enhance our clothing, our accessories, our immediate environment… a process I am very interested in in the hopes if mimicking this aesthetics within my work.

Miss Multiverse Australia national costume

Recently I was invited to create the Miss Multiverse Australia national costume for our AU representitive Gabrielle Keaton. For this project I also had my partner Zoran, of zoran architecture, help me by digitising my sketches: sections of the Opera House Shells into CAD files ready to 3D print while I took care of the sewing and freehand 3Doodler 3D printer pen extruded components. The dress, headpiece & arm cuff took just over five weeks to complete, with some of the machine 3D printed pieces taking 24 hours alone to print. I also ended up machine quilting my interpretation of the chevron tile pattern which adorns the surface of the Opera House  onto the skirt to add more detail, which on its own took over a week full time to complete. The freehand details where also very time consuming. Once all of these sections where complete, I assembled them together like a layered jigsaw puzzle and the whole dress emerged.

Special thanks to 3doodler who helped me out with equipment and filaments to use on this piece. I utilised a total of 206 clear Flexy filaments on the bodice
34 coloured flexy filaments (mix of "clearly Flexy" yellow and green) for the arm cuff.

Embroidered photo keepsakes

I once found an old photo album at a thrift store, I remember feeling captivated looking through the stills of those stranger’s lives, the last photo was a wedding photo, which made me wonder about their love, their life and their experiences.
Since then I’ve had a fascination with vintage photos as well as incorporating something of myself creatively and I like think I’ve woven myself into the scene in some way. These are some.....more

sARTorial 2016

In September Jake Hempson Artist & I collaborated on a fashion meets tech work for sARTorial an event organised by DLUX, and held during the Sydney Fringe Festival. I designed two garments using 3D extruded materials & LED lighting while Jake also utilised the Lux Operon theme as inspiration for his augmented reality design layers.

3Doodler Gold Dress
In May 2016, I used my 3Doodler Create to produce this gold dress. The dress featured cut away design from which I took inspiration from the pattern & gill formation of the golden stingray. The dress was made entirely from 330 strands of 3Doodler gold flexy filament and took three full weeks to complete.

Erica Gray's Futurisitc "Forms Organic"
I’m interested in incorporating a mixture of freehand and machine printed pieces into some of my future works. Although freehand printing is predominantly more my style (as my work is more about the handmade, bespoke), one of a kind aesthetic.…the juxtaposition of structured componentry and the loose freehand form combination sounds intriguing and definitely worth further investigation.”...more.

3Doodler Award Fashion Winner
Erica Gray is an artist based in Queensland, Australia who works in a variety of mediums including painting, stitched textiles, wearable art and soft sculpture. She received her original 3Doodler as one of our early Kickstarter backers, but ended up putting it on the back-burner. It wasn't until the release of the 3Doodler 2.0 that Erica became interested in producing wearable sculpture pieces with the pen. This resulted in the most breathtaking pair of "first Doodle" projects we've seen yet....Read more

“The pieces often translate into works comprising a blend of human and animalistic form that is often layered with meaning, through to pieces designed to play on emotions; works that toy with childhood memories and growing up, spending time on farms, disjointed family connections, empathy for the lost, a love of animals as well as the fun times.......click here for more
